AH Designs - High performance SQUARE yoyo design!
When YoYoFactory team member Alex Hattori isn't blowing our minds with his 3A skills or blowing up battle bots on TV, he spends his time honing his yoyo design skills. One special design that started out as a silly "what if..." project while attending MIT as a freshman in 2015 has finally become a reality that we can all enjoy - The Boost Squared!
The Boost Squared is somewhat of a departure from Alex's signature Boost line of yoyos. It steers away from the competition oriented design with a unique not-so-round shape that doesn't take itself too seriously. Yes, we said not-so-round, because this is a SQUARE yoyo, and easily one of the best square yoyos we have ever thrown!
This square is designed to perform as well as a square-ish/circle (squircle?) yo-yo possibly can. As Alex put it - "It’s about as floaty as an SUV and as organic as an Iphone XS Max." It features a round catch zone and cup so grinds and fingerspins are still easy to perform. It plays surprisingly well and makes an excellent conversation piece. If you're in the market for a square yoyo then look no further!
For more information on the design process, check out Alex's blog post here! There are many noteworthy features for this yo-yo so read the disclaimer below BEFORE purchasing.
1) When the yo-yo is spinning, it stores a significant amount of energy and can cause pain or injury if the yo-yo engages with something too fast. Catch and throw carefully.
2) There are typically some small anodizing defects in the hub because my manufacturer is not a normal yoyo manufacturer due to the unique nature of the design.
3) This yo-yo had to be manufactured using different methods than typical yo-yos. As a result there is occasionally a small amount of vibe. Every Boost Squared is hand tested and assembled by Alex and from the prototype run it has been even more improved. But we would say do not purchase if a small amount of vibe on a square yoyo will annoy you.
4) Due to the nature of the square shape, it is sometimes difficult to get the two halves lined up. All Boost Squared are shipped clocked correctly but once a user unscrews it, Alex cannot guarantee the user can clock the halves back perfectly. Though this run does feature a longer axle than prototype run and generally lines up easier.
