Duncan - Bi-metal bumblebee!

$ 64.99

From Duncan: There’s just something about the feeling of catching a forward pass... That’s what we are reminded of when we think of the Bumblebee. To us, the original Bumblebee is synonymous with the rebellious playground yo-yo play emblematic of the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

The Bumblebee was something you could pull out of your bit-too-baggy jeans and jam on while waiting for your friends outside the gas station. It was dependable, fashionable, and you felt slightly underdressed when leaving home without it. This aura is what we chased when designing the all-new bimetal Bumblebee for the modern era!

Now a fully modern bimetal yo-yo, the new Bumblebee takes notes from the original schoolyard-classic Bumblebee and channels that daily carry, grab-it-and-go energy. It features the same extreme slim gap design as the original, allowing it to slip into and out of your pockets effortlessly. Further, it features a small bearing, like the original, and is a fully responsive yo-yo, giving it the distinct aura of nostalgia that Duncan products are well-known for. It accepts both friction stickers and 19mm silicone pads, giving you the power to customize your play.

No.

I really wanted to like this yoyo, thinking it might be like a cross between the Hornet and the Deep State, and I guess it sorta is. But it turns out that's just not as good a thing as I expected.

First of all, this thing is heavy. It's not actually heavy, but somehow it just feels like I'm throwing a rock around by my finger. Maybe it's the weight distribution or the fact that it's fairly undersized, but it's clunky and lethargic. Combined with the odd semi-responsiveness it's almost dangerous. More than a few times I've missed a few binds, got frustrated and pulled a hard rage bind, and had the thing come back at me like a rocket. It's a little terrifying. I tried a handful of different strings to fix it, but nothing worked.

The only sorta fun way to play this yoyo is fully responsive with the included 3M stickers. But then it turns into a Killer Bee, trying as hard as it can to sting you. In the face. Sorry, but the Bumblebee is not fun. It looks cool in the case, but that's all it's good for.

Misleading...or not. READ ME!!!!!!!!!!!

So this thing is fantastic...it's not a Cold Fusion, it's not a SB2, it's not a Metallic Missile, etc. I'm a 90s kid and had all the classics and am just getting back into yo-yos; this guy was quite the trip at first.

On its own, right out of the box, it feels awful and is unresponsive or just plain awkwardly semi-responsive. Compared to the current Duncan Cold Fusion reinvention...it's not even close and makes you think something is wrong. You can keep it this way as a non-responsive slimline, you can thick lube it and try double knotting, etc...but it will never really get you there and basically just screw with you. The gap is huge for what this is.

Now here's how you get it to work as Duncan describes it its advertisements, lol. Try some thick string if needed, but PUT THE FRICTION STICKERS ON IT ASAP!!!!!!!! You have to put them on correctly and smooth them evenly/spend some time to get it right. If you do this and work it properly, and I guess thick lube it very well, it feels just like it belongs with those old 90s yo-yos but with a modern gap. You have to get the pads applied correctly and break this sucker in...it's just too wide of a gap as-is and will NOT handle responsively without getting it right.

After all that... this thing feels like my stock Cold Fusion(rubber pads only so far) and almost has the same sort of snap as a NOS Metallic Missile that I just picked up. I like this thing a lot, and it gives me good nostalgia vibes. You just have to get it right!
