From Rain City Skills: The Author is a yoyo I’ve been waiting years to make. When I was working with King Yo Star, I had the opportunity to release a signature yoyo. The Pun was a great yoyo, but it wasn’t perfect. Five years later I have a lot more experience and a different set of needs.

First and foremost, I wanted a yoyo I’d enjoy playing. Something that wouldn’t be work to throw, that is smooth on the string and stable enough to work through designing a trick, and more importantly, teaching a trick. I’m also dealing with multiple shoulder injuries from car accidents. Most yoyos in the 64g+ range hit the end of the string with a tug and have a tug on the bind. It’s not a lot, but it adds up to reduced throwing time. When Justin and I were working on this design, light weight was my #2 design goal.

We ended up with a 56g yoyo. That’s right, 56g. When I got the prototype, I played with it for a week before it occurred to me to weight it. The proto was 55g, we added 1g to the rim so it would have a good thumb grind lip.

I think you are going to love this throw, it’s light but powerful, and has a comfortable curve. It sits somewhere in the “W” shape ballpark but leaning towards an “O” shaped gap rather than a “V”. And of course, The Author includes the signature Rain City Skills Lego hub you’ve come to know and love.

Surprizingly fast and stable

I feel that for the price you get an excellent yo-yo. It is VERY quick and nimble yet stable enough. Binds super easily, maybe even a little too eaily, thought it could just be I need to wear down the response pads a little bit. Mine came wrapped in a printed paper with an autograph on it, a few kego pieces, a string and a sticker. Overall a great purchase and I am very happy with it.

You're going to love it

Being 10g under the typical target weight, you would think it would sacrifice a lot of performance, but it doesn't. You would think it would be tiny, but it isn't. It feels normal in the hand, and plays very well, and feels unlike anything I've tried. When my arms are tired after a long day of work, this is my "go-to" because it feels so light. It's like if jigglypuff were a yoyo. A great addition to any collection. You gotta try it.

restock in desperate need.

Super comfy shape. light weight placed in all the right places. Stable enough without feeling stale. spin times are perfectly adequate. blast finish feels great. I can't quite get over the engravings though. An restock with more solids and no engravings would be amazing. overall a great yoyo at an insane price point.

Fantastic!

I thought 65-67 in weight was the sweet spot for me so I was not knowing what to expect with this. Even though this does not hit the end of the string with a big kachunka-chunk - it plays like it’s got lots of weight but with the ease and comfort of a wood fixie like the YYF Legend wing. This may be the most comfy yoyo I have ever thrown and I am amazed that something so light plays so well. I do not feel I need to pamper it to get it to do what I want. The finish is perfect and it feels great to hold, throw, and in returns.

Full disclosure, my enthusiasm for this yoyo is partially influenced by how cool corresponding with Rain City is. They answer Email quickly and personally and include fun, idiosyncratic stuff with their yoyos. My Author came with a weird little Lego figure snake god with a scimitar, four stickers, and three high-quality (Zipline?) strings. The yoyo itself works as advertised: a noticeably lighter alternative to currently popular 65 gram range, it unrolls with a gentle tug and plays with the stability and catchability of bigger throws. That said, it sheds inertia faster than its bigger counterparts and requires very precise handling to make it back to the hand at the end of ambitious combos. I've been using it learn specific tricks–it works very nicely with moves like the Evan Nagao Redirect. The finish looks better in real life; my Sports Writer colorway is my collection's best looking.
